Introduction:

Classic Navy - Cotton Drill is one of our drill and twill fabrics: traditionally used to make workwear and utility clothing. Still used for uniforms and countless outdoor purposes from equestrian to workwear, and all manner of clothing and accessories, through to useful homewares and soft furnishings. Read on for inspiring ideas and hints and tips about our new addition to the Drills & Twills section.

Colour:

Classic Navy is as its name suggests a classic dark, inky blue- think midnight navy in the deepest depths of a rural sky. Perfect teamed with racing green, gold and white for a nautical - 'Yacht club' style. We love the practicality of this hardwearing classic navy fabric.

Properties:

Drills and twills are traditionally used in protective clothing production for industrial workers and those with outdoor jobs. Popular for country wear, bushcraft styles, hunting shooting, fishing and many other outdoor pursuits particularly in green, brown and natural hues. This iconic style popularised during wartime for practical and hardworking clothing quickly filtered down to become a basic staple, seen in most wardrobes. Its fine twill weave, stable handle, medium weight, and pleasing cotton feel that gets better with time, make Classic Navy perfect for a plethora of practical and classic clothing.

This fabric boasts excellent strength, stability and a versatile handle. It will drape well and has a pleasing malleable hand, yet will hold crisp details such as collars and top-stitched panels; characteristic of jeans and utility styles.

Garment Suggestions:

Classic Navy is the ideal fabric for country-style outdoorsy clothing. Team with country tweed fabrics for classic outdoor styling or mix things up and team with punch, bright-toned fabrics for a quirky colour-blocked palette. All you have to do is decide what to make from this super versatile fabric. Here are a few helpful suggestions to set you on your way:

There are of course countless other brilliant sewing patterns available, these are but a few. Other excellent uses are craft aprons, tool aprons/holders, tote bags, messenger bags, hats, caps, rucksacks, and barrel bags.

Bought the cotton drill in navy & bottle green to make the Ilford jacket. My first jacket make - pattern was great but the fabric definitely makes it! Easy to work with and very stable. Blue one is finished & I’ll be making another soon. As always easy to use website, great choice of fabrics and very prompt delivery. Thank you.
